Pixelache Festival 2019: Breaking the Fifth Wall

PIXELACHE FESTIVAL:

Breaking the Fifth Wall

20. - 26. May 2019, Helsinki

Breaking the Fifth Wall

/// SOLU, Luotsikatu 13, Katajanokka, 00160 Helsinki ///

/// 21.5. - 26.5. / Tue - Thu 14:00-18:00 / Fri - Sat 10:00-18:00 / Sun 13:00-17:00 ///

/// Vernissage / 20.5. at 17:00 ///

Breaking the Fifth wall focuses on inclusiveness before specialisation, difference before identity and play before culture. The festival is about creating and simultaneously exploring alternative pathways, tangible interactions apart from the anaesthetised interfaces which slowly envelope our social interactions.

The Pixelache Helsinki 2019 festival will be held throughout the city, with a programme of events and installations within its borders however our intent is to draw audience members away from the usual central city cultural spaces, with workshops held in the culturally diverse neighbourhoods of Kontula in East Helsinki (Museum of Impossible Forms), former industrial spaces repurposed as cultural zones (Oranssi, Kalasatama), independent art spaces (Maa-Tila, Sörnäinen and SOLU an artistic laboratory and platform for art, science and society) as well as outside of the city itself with a fully developed collaboration with our partners Seinäjoki’s Taidehalli.

M{IF} talk by Jack Halberstam : Trans* Art

Trans* Art
M{IF} talk by Jack Halberstam
February 2nd, 2019 I 18:00

In his brilliant, humorous and whimsical parody of a Smithsonian book titled American History in 101 Objects, artist Chris E. Vargas, in 2015, invited visitors into his imaginary Museum of Transgender Hirstory to see a show titled Transgender Hirstory in 99 Objects. Riffing on the self-importance of the Smithsonian title, the precision of its 101 objects and its investment in the notion of authentic history in the first place, Vargas called attention to the way that a history of gender variance will necessarily fall by the wayside in any canonical account of American history and will require its own object lessons. The objects that collectively tell the story of gender variance are counter-intuitive and suggestive, risqué and emblematic. For Vargas’s show, the objects ranged from queer banners by Tuesday Smilie to sculptures of hybrid creatures and photographic records of transgender lives gone by. What Transgender Hirstory in 99 Objects made clear, however, was that a trans* history is all at once a mobile set of materials and an archive of mobility. In this talk, we will, explore the wide range of materials in this archive and craft with them a trans* politics.

Writing as a Means of Struggle / Writing as an Archive of the Unthinkable (Workshop)
What is memory? What is art? What is struggle? What is trauma? What wounds dwell in the subconscious, how is the subconscious structured as language and how do we write, if writing is a game of darts, where the arrows are boomerangs? What does it mean to use writing as an archive of the unthinkable, both in the past and the future? Why do we keep decorating the dinner table of the power which holds us hostage? What are the implications of mobilizing the necessary strength in order to fight for vulnerability?
In this workshop, we collectively explore how writing can be used as a way of transforming subjects and societies.

Feminist Anti Racist Night School (FAR) : Confronting class in institutional settings

In our first FAR night school learning session of the fall 2018 semester, we will engage with social class, a concept that is often ignored in discussions of structural inequality in contemporary society. How do institutional settings (such as health care, school, work places) privilege and reward behaviour associated with certain class groups? How does class intersect with identity categories such as race, gender and sexuality? How can we question class-based barriers in our everyday lives (as a friend, family member, student, employee, consumer etc.)?

ACOUSTIC PERFORMANCE @ M{𝓲𝑓} with Ramy Essam - رامى عصام‎

Ramy Essam's songs spread in like wildfire among the demonstrators on Tahrir Square  during the height of the Egyptian uprising in 2011. His song Irhal, in which then Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak was urged to resign, is referred to as the anthem of a whole generation of young Egyptians’ struggle for a better future.
